11:35 PM EDT
THE PRESIDENT: Good evening. Tonight, I can report to the American people and the world that the United States carried out an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of Al Qaeda, a terrorist who is responsible for killing thousands of innocent men, women and children.
It's been almost 10 years that a bright September day was darkened by the worst attack on the American people in our history. Images of 9.11 is recorded in our national memory - hijacked planes cutting a cloudless sky in September, the Twin Towers collapsing on the floor, black smoke billowing above the Pentagon, the wreckage of Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where the actions of heroic citizens even more grief and destruction.
And yet we know that the worst pictures are those that were invisible to the world. The empty chair at the dinner table. Children who were forced to grow up without a mother or father. Parents who would never know the feeling your child's embrace. About 3,000 citizens taken from us, leaving a hole in our hearts.
On September 11, 2001, in our time of suffering, the American people were united. We offer a hand to our neighbors, and the wounded offer our blood. We reaffirm our ties with each other and our love for our community and country. That day, no matter where we come from, what God we pray, or what race or ethnicity we were, we were united as one American family.
We were also united in our determination to protect our nation and bring those who committed this brutal attack to justice. We quickly learned that the 9 / 11 attacks were carried out by Al Qaeda - an organization led by Osama bin Laden, who had openly declared war on the United States and pledged to kill innocent people in our country and around the globe. And so we went to war against Al Qaeda to protect our citizens, our friends and our allies.
Over the past 10 years, thanks to the tireless and heroic work of our military professionals and our fight against terrorism, we have made great strides in this effort. We stopped terrorist attacks and has strengthened our homeland defense. In Afghanistan, we removed the Taliban government that had given refuge to bin Laden and al Qaeda support and security. And around the globe, we work with our friends and allies to capture or kill dozens of al Qaeda terrorists, including some who were part of lot 9.11.
However, Osama bin Laden avoided capture and escaped across the border with Afghanistan to Pakistan. However, Al Qaeda continues to operate from along the border and operate through its subsidiaries worldwide.
And so, soon after taking office, I drove Leon Panetta, the CIA director, to do the killing or capturing bin Laden a top priority of our war against Al Qaeda, as we continue our broader efforts to disrupt, dismantle and the defeat of its network.
Then, last August, after years of hard work by our intelligence community, I was informed about a possible link to bin Laden. It was far from certain, and it took many months to run this thread to the ground. I met several times with my national security team as we develop more information about the possibility that we had located Bin Laden hiding in a compound deep inside Pakistan. And finally, last week, I determined we had enough intelligence to act, and authorized an operation to get Osama bin Laden and bring him to justice.
Today in my direction, the U.S. launched an operation directed against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. A small group of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and ability. No Americans were hurt. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body.
For over two decades, bin Laden was the leader of Al Qaeda and symbol, and continued to plot attacks against our country and our friends and allies. Bin Laden's death marks the most significant achievement to date in our nation's effort to defeat al Qaeda.
However, his death does not mark the end of our effort. There is no doubt that Al Qaeda will continue to pursue attacks against us. We need - and we - be vigilant at home and abroad.
By doing so, we must also reaffirm that the United States is not - and never will be - at war with Islam. I of course, just as President Bush did right after 9 / 11, that our war is not against Islam. Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader, he was a mass murderer of Muslims. In fact, Al Qaeda has slaughtered dozens of Muslims in many countries, including ours. So his death should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and dignity.
Over the years, I have repeatedly made clear it would take action in Pakistan if we knew where bin Laden. That's what we did. But it is important to note that our counter-terrorism cooperation with Pakistan has helped lead us to bin Laden and the complex where he was hiding. In fact, bin Laden declared war against Pakistan as well, and ordered the attacks against the Pakistani people.
Tonight, I called for President Zardari, and my team has also spoken with his counterparts in Pakistan. They agree that this is a good day, historic for our two nations. And going forward, it is essential that Pakistan will continue to join us in the fight against Al Qaeda and its affiliates.
The American people did not choose this fight. He came to our shores, and began with the senseless killing of our citizens. After nearly 10 years of service, sacrifice and struggle, we know well the costs of war. These efforts will weigh on me every time I, as commander-in-Chief has to sign a letter from a family that lost a loved one, or look in the eyes of a service member was seriously injured.
So Americans understand the costs of war. However, as a country, we will never tolerate our security being threatened, nor stand idly by when our people were killed. We will be relentless in protecting our citizens and our friends and allies. We will be faithful to the values that make us who we are. And on nights like this, we can say to the families who lost loved ones to the Al Qaeda terror: Justice was done.
Tonight, we give thanks to intelligence and counterterrorism many professionals who worked tirelessly to achieve this result. The American people see your work, or know their names. But today, they feel satisfaction from your work and the result of his quest for justice.
We give thanks to the men who carried out this operation because exemplify professionalism, patriotism and courage of those odd that serve our country. And they are part of a generation that has borne the largest share of the load since that September day.
Finally, let me say to the families who lost loved ones in 11/09 that has never forgotten their loss, nor wavered in our commitment to see that we do everything to prevent another attack on our shores.
And today, let's think back to the sense of unity that prevailed 11/09. I know he has sometimes worn. However, the performance today is a testament to the greatness of our country and the determination of the American people.
The cause of the security of our country is not complete. But today, we are reminded once again that America can do whatever we put our mind. This is the story of our history, it is the pursuit of prosperity for our people, or the struggle for equality for all our citizens, our commitment to defend our values abroad and our sacrifices to make the world a safer place .
Let us remember that we can do these things not only because of wealth or power, but because of who we are: one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
Thanks. May God bless you. And may God bless the United States of America.
